Deep Tissue vs. Therapeutic Massage:
Which One Do You Actually Need?

By Tina Zhang, CMT  ·  May 2025  ·  6 min read

This is our most common question from new clients: "What's the difference between deep tissue and therapeutic massage — and which should I book?" Both address pain and tension, and both are available at our Mountain View studio. But they're not the same thing, and choosing the right one makes a real difference in your results.

The Short Answer

Deep tissue massage is defined by technique — firm, sustained pressure applied slowly to reach deeper muscle layers and connective tissue. Therapeutic massage is defined by intent — clinically focused bodywork designed to address a specific condition, using whatever techniques are most effective for that goal. In practice, a therapeutic session might include deep tissue work, but it also draws on other modalities depending on what your body needs that day.

Deep Tissue Massage

Technique-defined
  • Firm, sustained pressure throughout
  • Targets deeper muscle and fascia layers
  • Best for chronic muscle tension & knots
  • Common for sciatica, tech neck, desk-job pain
  • More intense — some discomfort is normal

Therapeutic Massage

Outcome-defined
  • Customized per session to your condition
  • May include multiple techniques
  • Best for specific diagnoses & treatment goals
  • Common for headaches, postural issues, RSI
  • Pressure adjusted to the area being treated

When to Choose Deep Tissue

  • You have generalized muscle tension and tightness from sitting at a desk, training, or physical labor
  • You want firm pressure and know your body responds well to it
  • You're dealing with chronic knots (trigger points) in your back, shoulders, or legs
  • You're an athlete who wants recovery work between training sessions
  • You have sciatica and want focused work on the glutes and piriformis

When to Choose Therapeutic Massage

  • You have a specific diagnosis — tension headaches, carpal tunnel, rotator cuff issues, TMJ, IT band syndrome
  • You're dealing with postural imbalances that cause referred pain
  • You've had previous injury and certain areas need careful, modified technique
  • You want your session to support a treatment plan alongside physical therapy or chiropractic care
  • You're sensitive to pressure but still want therapeutic outcomes — not just relaxation
Not Sure? Here's Our Recommendation

When in doubt, book a Therapeutic Massage first. It gives your therapist the flexibility to use the right technique for what your body actually needs on that day, rather than being locked into one approach. It's our most popular service for exactly this reason.
