One of the most common questions we receive is whether clients can pay for massage therapy using their HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds. The short answer is yes — in most cases. Here is what you need to know.
Massage therapy is considered a qualified medical expense under IRS guidelines when it is prescribed by a licensed physician to treat a specific medical condition. Conditions that commonly qualify include chronic back pain, neck pain, sciatica, tension headaches, post-surgical recovery, lymphedema, and musculoskeletal conditions diagnosed by a doctor.
To use HSA/FSA for massage, you typically need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from your physician stating that massage therapy is prescribed for a specific condition. Check with your plan administrator for their documentation requirements.
CPT code selection depends on the actual service content of your session and is documented on your superbill. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your plan.
HyFlow Massage LLC also works with clients using out-of-network insurance benefits. We recommend calling your insurance provider before your first session and asking: Does my plan cover out-of-network massage therapy (CPT 97124) or manual therapy (CPT 97140)? Is a physician referral or LMN required? What is my deductible and reimbursement percentage?
